Corporate RAG: Build responses with verifiable sources
How to connect AI answers to the correct documents: versions, citations, incomplete questions and evidence to verify your research.

An assistant who responds on business documents must also help verify the response. When it indicates a procedure, those who read it should be able to understand where it comes from, whether it concerns the requested context and which version was used. Scrolling text alone does not offer this information.
Retrieval-Augmented Generation, often abbreviated to RAG, combines information retrieval with text generation. The work of Lewis and colleagues is a foundational reference for this approach. Linking documents and generation, however, does not automatically guarantee correct answers: the research, selection and interpretation of sources must also be verified.
Follow the path from question to source
To plan a first test, break down the path into three questions. Has the right document been found? Have the necessary steps been selected? Does the answer respect what those passages say? This separation allows you to address the point that isn't working, instead of treating each error as a generic defect in the model.
Imagine, as a hypothetical example, a request about the conditions of assistance of a machine. The system finds a relevant manual, but related to the previous version. The summary can be faithful to the document and still wrong for the user. It is a source selection problem, which a more elegant formulation does not solve.
Define the minimum usable document
Before uploading a collection, decide what information should accompany each file: understandable title, product or process covered, version, effective date, and responsible for the update. It also indicates who can consult it. A public page and a confidential internal procedure should not become interchangeable just because they talk about the same topic.
If a document covers multiple products, keep this relationship in the description. If a table uses notes or exceptions, verify that the text split does not separate the rule from its restriction. The recovered unit must contain enough context to be interpreted without changing the original meaning.
Make citations verifiable
A useful quote leads to the passage that supports a statement. Simply linking to the manufacturer's homepage or a very long PDF makes checking tiresome. When possible, show the document title, section and version, clearly distinguishing the source from the comment prepared by the assistant.
Try reading only the statement and the quoted passage, ignoring the rest of the answer. Is the connection really enough? A source that talks about installation does not demonstrate a promise of savings. A table relating to a product model does not authorize the data to be extended to the entire range.
Design the incomplete response too
When data is missing, the desired behavior can be a question for clarification. “What version are you using?” it helps more than an arbitrarily chosen procedure. If two sources conflict, the response should show the divergence and indicate what information is needed to resolve it.
A practical format includes four elements: supported response, reference, limit and next step. For example: «This passage is indicated in the version A manual; I couldn't find the procedure for version B. Check the product code before proceeding." It is an example structure, not an instruction for a real device.
Try cases that distinguish research and generation
- A question with an explicit answer in a single document.
- A question requesting two sections of the same document.
- An ambiguous name shared by different products.
- A procedure superseded by a subsequent revision.
- A question whose answer is not present in the collection.
- A source that the test user is not authorized to read.
Record retrieved documents, response and evaluation separately. Keeping only the final text makes it difficult to understand whether an edit has improved the research or just changed the way of writing. Even an apparently correct result deserves scrutiny if it cites a source that does not support it.
A small, coherent, verifiable collection is a more informative starting point than an indistinct archive. To organize your work on sources, consult the guide to evaluation with real test cases. To discuss a concrete case you can bring to EL-AI some questions and the documents that should resolve them.
